Each smoker costs their employer $5,800 more in annual healthcare costs than the average employee. Yet most employers aren't addressing the problem. Sixty-six percent (66%) of consumers enrolled in a sponsored wellness program said their program does not include a medical test for nicotine use, according to a recent survey of 750 wellness program participants. What's more, 57 percent said their wellness plan does not offer a smoking cessation program.

Patient engagement outside of the clinical setting is key to closing gaps in care. A recent HealthMine survey found that 74% of insured consumers believe easy electronic access to their healthcare data would enhance their understanding of their care as well as improve communication with their physicians. Personalized communication using technology can also play an important role.

Most people with chronic conditions say they are not concerned with their health, according to a recent survey by Parks Associates. Engagement is the problem for healthcare sponsors and their members. While mobile tools may hold part of the answer, they are not delivering just yet. HealthMine found that about 60 percent of consumers are dealing with a chronic condition, but while many have access to digital health tools and workplace wellness programs, only 7 percent are using them for health management.

The majority of wellness programs not incentivized financially--according to a survey of 750 consumers enrolled in these programs--were disease management/medication adherence at 83 percent, cancer screenings at 80 percent, smoking cessation at 66 percent, biometric screenings at 59 percent and health risk assessments at 53 percent.

Incentives and personalization are key ingredients of a wellness program with engaged members, according to two recent consumer surveys. For example, over 80 percent of respondents said their wellness programs do not reward disease management and medication adherence activities, nor cancer screenings. Only 44 percent of patients reported that their programs offer incentives for quitting smoking.
